Welcome DownSouth Readers are y’all ready to get into our first recipe blog? I hope so because today we have a quick and easy southern rooted breakfast recipe. This Crispy Spicy Sausage Ball recipe consisting of sausage, cream cheese, sharp cheese, and spices encased in a crispy deep fried shell is going to make mornings well worth waking up for. Lets get started with a brief history lesson.Sausage Balls or as they would say in the beginning sausage and flour can be dated back as early as the 1930’s but took on popularity in the 1960’s. This came due to the General Mills Bisquick Phenomenon during the height of convenience baking rise. This gave the recipe a whole new light using the bisquick mix, sausage, and cheese as a binder deep fried or baked. Ever since then people have made their own takes on the recipe. So lets get started on my version of the sausage ball recipe.
Story Time
This recipe was introduced to me by my grandmother. On the day before Thanksgiving Eve and Christmas Eve all of her grandchildren would spend the night. In the morning we were welcomed with the smell of a full breakfast spread. One of our favorite items to have were her Crispy sausage Balls. There was never enough to go around and always a fight to the death for the last one. This recipe brings back childhood memories and the good old days when everyone stayed at grandma’s house. This recipe has been a staple in my family and my life past down, cherished and straight up southern.
Tips & Tricks
This recipe is very easy to make with only a couple ingredients. This recipe should only take 30 – 40 minutes to prepare and cook. To ensure that your sausage balls stay together it is SUPER IMPORTANT that you refrigerate your sausage balls after rolling them 10 minutes in the freezer. Not refrigerating my sausage balls was my biggest mistake when I made them for the first time. Which leads me to frying them. When frying your Sausage balls fry them for only 2-3 mins DO NOT EXCEED or you will burn up the cream cheese (TRUST THE PROCESS).
Food Pairings
You may or may not be wondering what you can pair this item with and it is safe to say that it can easily go with any breakfast meal my favorite is simply with a side of eggs scrambled with cheese but it can be paired with several different things for example:

– Eggs
– Grits
– Pancakes
– French Toast
This recipe doesn’t have to be served just at breakfast; it really could be made at any time and still be the star of the show. I am so happy to share this dish with you and create my first ever blog post. Thank you for joining me and I hope you enjoy the post and the recipe. It was made with love.
Peace,
Chef Courtney
